Great article! Definitely has me thinking of the various niche’s I’ve intentionally pursued and have ‘fallen into’ over the years. And now, I’m still pondering what niche my writing/book publishing goals belong in?
(Perhaps this comment is another confirmation of alignment for you - as I found myself wondering if your unique perspective could help me figure out which book to write first! 😊)
I’ve always struggled with choosing a niche - mostly because of my multi-passionate array of interests! And I’ve often found that what people ask me for is not what I want to continue to pursue (photography and website design are a no - not sure about continuing with Interior Design. Would like to move more towards offering services/courses in Intentional Lifestyle Design while writing non-fiction, memoir, and fictionalized true stories.)
Seeing where you are on your journey also shows me that finding the right niche requires courage to put more of what you WANT to be doing out into the world first. How else would anyone know they can come to you for that?
You'd like to move towards offering services/courses in 'intentional lifestyle design' - so, would this be the focus of your non-fiction? If so, this looks like a niche to me...
You're absolutely right that moving into your chosen niche means plonking yourself right in there and telling everyone about it. Even if they want you to be doing something else.
Existing clients may drop away but new ones will come in their place.
Yes, I’ve been exploring how my book concepts would fit into that intentional lifestyle design niche - and if that’s a good ‘umbrella’ so to speak.
I’m currently writing a book and developing an online course about creating space to thrive (which draws from my background in interior design, experiential placemaking, and design psychology coaching).
And my memoir drafts are about spontaneous adventures I’ve taken to explore the world, to learn more about who I was becoming at different points in time + they share my reflections on how the environments we inhabit and experience shape our sense of identity, belonging, and overall wellbeing.
I also wrote a healing memoir (unpublished) - about my mothers suicide - and ultimately how I’ve learned to intentionally create a life that supports my own wellbeing due to mental health and chronic Illness struggles.
