I truly loathe that Tattle exists! A website dedicated to being cruel to strangers – just what we need.

Two points that I relate to on this. I was trolled too but not on Tattle, on Substack of all places. When it happened, it actually really shook me, more so than I expected. The second is that I too am regularly referred to as an influencer because of my Instagram following but content creation for Instagram is not how I earn a living. I'm a writer and my income is solely from writing, so it really, really irked me when I linked to one of my articles a few months ago and someone responded accusing me of not declaring it as an ad. It wasn't an ad. I'd written a restaurant guide for Mr & Mrs Smith's editorial platform for a small pence-per-word fee. I hadn't stayed in any of their hotels and I had paid for all of my meals, they weren't expensed. At that moment, I wanted to delete my Instagram account in exasperation! If I was an influencer in the traditional sense, I'd be making a damn sight more money than I am as a writer for magazines and I think that's what really got my goat.

I know that feeling so well, of just wanting to disappear from online life altogether. And yet, when you think of all the people who might be benefiting from your work, and compare that to the trolls or the people who share annoying messages about how something needs to be tagged, the latter are so few. I think that’s why it sometimes important to have these conversations, so that we feel less alone with it and can remind each other to keep going. Xx

You’re a great teacher and course writer Annie! You really know how to break everything down and support women to get things done. I’m so glad to hear you’ve found your way back to it ❤️

Good for you, Annie. I can’t bear sites like Tattle - the patriarchy in disguise. Cheering you on - heaven knows we need more women to role model success so that more women can see how normal it gets to be to have it for themselves! We really have an opportunity to change things around here and the more women online leading with integrity and not shrinking every time someone projects all over them, the better! ❤️

I read your post the other day and it’s stuck with me since. I don’t understand why women feel the need to be this bitchy towards one another (because it seems to be largely women). The words of my dad, when I was very small still come back to me even now, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it. But it seems that social media has given the appearance that it’s ok to say whatever we want, whenever we want, to whoever we want, without taking responsibility for what those words might do. So thinking of my dad, I know people who raved about your courses in a really good way. They shared how transformational they were and seriously good value for money. Looking forward to seeing what else you put out into the world.

Thank you so much for this message, Emma. And to your dad for sharing that simple but powerful message that we all need to be reminded of. I often say this to my children, and suggest it’s their response when people say something rude to them. Ax

I've never even heard of Tattle. Sounds awful.

Why people feel good to put other down is beyond me…

I have never heard of that site you mention, but people put me down very hard in school. So I understand the feeling.

We just need to learn to shrugg it off and not listen on it 😊
