Why I did a magic spell for my business

And how it actually worked.

During the pandemic, I started doing magic spells.

I was sleeping and working in a loft bedroom and I’d open the Velux window, lean out, look up at the clouds and recite these spells.

I’d call to Zeus, Vesta and an earthly kind of energy.

I was asking for business success: more sales, more customers, more money.

Because our family of five was living off my fairly new online course business and because I believe in magic.

If you don’t believe in magic, stay with me a minute. I’m going to explain how it works.

So, the business side of it was that I’d created these online courses, they were popular and we were doing well off the back of them.

But I had to do a ‘launch’ every month, to bring in sales.

That meant finding the energy to talk about a particular course, get people excited about it and - ultimately - get them feeling like they wanted to sign up.

I quite like selling. I find it thrilling. But it does require a certain amount of energy, confidence and self-belief.

These spells were my way of:

1. Focusing on what I wanted (more sales).

2. Handing over some of the responsibility to a power bigger than me.

3. Adjusting my mindset to one of growth and success.

What I could have been thinking is:

• These courses are never going to sell because my luck is running out.

• No one wants to buy online courses any more.

• I’m going to fail because I’m not good enough.

But when we let a negative narrative like that circulate in our mind, it creates blockages.

With less confidence in our abilities, we say ‘no’ when we should be saying ‘yes’.

We become blind to new paths and opportunities.

Whereas thinking positive thoughts creates new neural pathways in our brains (this is the actual science part). We are then open to opportunities, people, possibilities.

Also, thinking positive thoughts makes us happier (obviously) and reduces stress.

When we are happier and less stressed, we are better-placed to sell our products and services.

Imagine two people trying to sell you an online course:

• One is low in energy, isn’t sure it’s that great and is finding it hard to explain why you should buy it.

• One is so excited about their course, they are telling you all the ways it will help you and you can see they really believe in themselves and this course.

Who you gonna buy from?

Positive energy is contagious, alluring and addictive. We all want to be around those people who glow because they are loving life so much.

And positive energy will help you to sell.

So, there I was, in the pandemic, calling out to Zeus, in the clouds:

Zeus, Zeus, King of Gods, pour down upon me the generosity for which thou art justly famous.

I’d stand with my arms out wide, picturing him up there looking like this:

… (but a bit fitter) and imagining he was pouring this golden energy into my body.

I’d repeat this magic spell over and over.

And then I’d recite two other spells.

(Feminists: one was to a goddess. I know women can send the power too.)

Each spell made me feel a different kind of ‘good’.

I’d then sit down at my laptop full of new ideas for stories I could tell online that would show people how my course could help them.

I’d feel energised, enthusiastic, full of confidence and self-belief and ready to get to work.

Over time, I incorporated more and more spiritual rituals like this into my working day and I could see how much it helped.

I used tarot for decision-making, gemstones to ground me when I was feeling untethered, meditation, breathwork, a gratitude practice and more.

It was all working well for me, so I pitched a book on ‘Woo in the workplace’ about how these spiritual tools could bring you business success.

By the time I got a book deal, two years later, I’d come across the term ‘SQ’, which stands for spiritual quotient.

But in the same way that we refer to ‘EQ’ as emotional intelligence, I say that ‘SQ’ is about spiritual intelligence.

While researching my book, I learned that Oprah Winfrey believes in SQ, Deepak Chopra, Brené Brown, Steve Jobs (RIP) and Elizabeth Gilbert do too.

I saw that all the most successful people knew about this SQ secret.

And so I shared their SQ experiences, tips and stories in the book, too.

Raise your SQ was published, and people started reading it and told me it had changed their lives; that they were going to be dipping back in for years to come.
